The warden

13th January 2026

Painting by Lou Zhen

She grew up on the street,

where the grammar of gentleness didn’t exist.

Kindness had passed her by.

She mistook fear for order

and silence for respect.

She ruled the orphanage

by bells and locked doors.

The children grew smaller under her shadow,

while she guarded the wound

that made her cruel.
