Welcome to the whimsical world of Dheera Kitchlu
Writer, illustrator, and dreamer of beautiful things. A believer in gentle magic, she runs life’s race on the slow track. On a path lined with wildflowers, she walks with purpose, passion, and positivity. Dheera’s journey has been anything but ordinary. From running a spirited horse-riding school in the heart of New Delhi, to representing her college in squash, to bringing Shakespeare to life for adult learners of English. She started a school in her home for the underprivileged children of her colony. UNICEF and the Red
Cross supported her in providing the children with medical aid and a nutritious mid-day meal. Each child was sponsored by families who saw them through their academic career and helped them get jobs. Dheera worked with a Swedish firm to set up an open-air school in Nangloi, the then overlooked corner of the city’s slum rehabilitation program. She has carved her own adventurous path through the world of education, sport and imagination.

A lifelong struggle with dyslexia meant she was often left behind in the fixed lanes
of conventional academics. But what she lacked in rote learning, she made up for
in fierce creativity. She not only found her voice—she gave it wings. Today, she is
the author of thirteen books, many brought to life with her own whimsical
illustrations. Her mission: to tell stories and to make learning joyful, inclusive, and
accessible to every child, regardless of background or ability.

Not just writings
Dheera has worn many hats, each one stitched with purpose. She has taught, mentored, and led—as an unconventional teacher at the Sophia nursery in Bombay, then principal at the same school and later as the Assistant Directress of the Sophia polytechnic. Her words have found many homes: in the pages of Chicken Soup for the Indian Couple’s Soul, in television scripts, in the lilting voiceovers of a radio show, and in the melodies of children’s music cassettes. Her books have become more than just stories—they’ve served as supplementary readers in schools and have found a special place in the Talking Library at the National Association for the Blind in Bombay. She’s written original plays and elocution pieces in both English and Hindi for children across grades one to twelve, creating space for young voices to express themselves confidently and creatively. She has mentored young writers online across India and helped them hone their writing skills.
