Beautiful nymphs, angry gods and fearsome monsters take on a life of their own in the vivid imagination of the absorbed child as she listens to her granny’s tales.
When the idea for MY GRANNY’S GREEK TALES formed in Dheera’s head, she thought of getting advice from Dr. Mulk Raj Anand. He was a family friend, she had never met, even though she lived four houses away from him in Bombay.
Uncle Mulk, he insisted she call him that, was in his 80s at the time and somewhat feeble. His eyes danced when he heard her grandfather’s name. ‘Your Bara Daddy gave me Rs. 100/- and helped me run away from home when I was 17,’ he said. ‘That is how I went to England and started my writing career. I owe him a huge debt. Tell me what I can do for you young lady.’
Uncle Mulk wrote the introduction for her books and Rupa & Co. published My Granny’s Greek Tales in 2 volumes. Jasbinder had spoilt Dheera with his fabulous illustrations for My Friend Sadhu Shiva, so she was disappointed with the illustrations for these books, but it wasn’t under her control.
