‘The sangfroid of these ladies,’ writes Dheera, their ability to smilingly sustain themselves and face life, which for them is a daily challenge, left me feeling diminutive.
The lone nonfiction book for adults, FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT, was commissioned by the National Association for the Blind, NAB, while Dheera was recording story books for their talking library.
As it happened, the Neelam Kanga Memorial fund at NAB completed 20 years of being and decided to produce a book which profiled the life of 25 women achievers who had risen to great heights after going blind.
NAB asked Dheera to write the book. The research for this book and her interaction with these indomitable ladies humbled Dheera and changed her perception. These 25 courageous ladies opened their heart and let Dheera get a glimpse into their life of struggle and the overcoming of it. Some of them wept while telling the tale, others were wistful but none of them were bitter or angry, only deeply grateful. This book stands out for the author as the most important of her collection.
